Apostille for a Power of Attorney Notarized in California

Apostille for a power of attorney that has already been notarized by a California notary public. $120 per document, state fee included, ready in 1-3 business days.

How it works

A power of attorney doesn't get an apostille directly. You sign it before a California notary public, and the Secretary of State then certifies that notary's signature.

That's why the order matters: notarization first, apostille second. The Secretary of State doesn't perform notarizations, so the document has to arrive already notarized.

Price and turnaround

$120 per document if the power of attorney is already notarized by a California notary public. The state fee is included, and turnaround is 1-3 business days.

Optional binding for $30

The Secretary of State attaches the apostille with an ordinary staple. In countries of the former Soviet Union, a stapled document sometimes raises questions.

If your power of attorney was notarized by another California notary and you send it to us only for the apostille, we can stitch and bind the pages after the apostille is attached. We leave the Secretary of State's staple in place, and the binding goes on top of it, so the apostille stays attached. This option costs $30.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an apostille on a power of attorney that isn't notarized yet?
No. The Secretary of State certifies the notary's signature and doesn't notarize documents itself, so the power of attorney has to be notarized by a California notary public first.
I'm not in California. Where do I get my signature notarized?
With any notary public near you. There's usually one at the nearest UPS Store location, and you can walk in without an appointment. In that case, though, the apostille comes from the state where the notary is commissioned, not from California. We handle that for $160. Outside California, there are also ways to have your signature notarized online. Ask us, and we'll share the details.
My power of attorney isn't in English. Is that a problem?
Not if the notarial certificate is in English. The rest of the document can be in any language. California Secretary of State rules allow this.
What happens if the document is rejected?
If it's rejected because of our mistake, we redo the work at no charge. If we did our part correctly and the document was notarized by another notary and sent to us only for the apostille, the fee still applies. When the situation isn't clear-cut, we can split the cost with you 50/50. We discuss the terms for your case before we start.
Do I need a separate apostille for each country?
No. The California Secretary of State issues the same apostille no matter which country the document is going to.
